Reflecting

As I sit and reflect on my life.  There were times I just lived it and there were times, I took action to make things happen..

I remember a few things from my childhood, I had to be around 5 or 6..  My parents had three horses for a very short time.  My Dads horse, a paint called “Joe”, my mom’s horse, a sorrel named “Sundance”, and a palomino they called “Queeny”.  I remember Queeny being hauled in the back of a truck.  The truck had a stock rack in it and the horse was right behind the cab.  I also remember having a black pony for a short period, whose name was “Prince.”

It's interesting what you remember from your younger days.  I remember watching tv shows, like Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, and Bonanza.  What stood out to me in those shows.   The horses….. Trigger, Silver and Little Joe’s paint, Conchise.

You think my Dad’s paint was named after little Joe on bonanza?  What about this, my mom had a pencil drawing of Robert Redford, framed and hung on the wall, back in the day.  My uncle drew the picture for her.  Think there might be some correlation between that picture and mom’s horse’s name?

My mom had a passion for horses, but they only had horses the one time.  I remember sharing with her at a young age, someday I would have horses.  She could come ride with me.

My life thus far has taken me through a world wind of activities.  Thirty years of marriage to a fantastic woman, and two wonderful kids.  Kids, who are now adults, starting their own journeys in life. Great family and friends, lots of adventures and many memories.

A few different career paths, building a couple of small businesses, one with a good friend.  Always searching for the next chapter, but most of those years did not include horses.

I was in my early 40’s when a friend invited me out to ride horses.  The fire was rekindled, but since we lived in town, the timing was just not right.

It wasn’t until about 10 years ago, when we moved out into the country that an opportunity arose to do something I had dreamt about since I was a kid.

My daughter expressed an interest in having a horse.  We now had property where it was possible to have a horse and it did not take any convincing me to start looking.  I was all in!

A quick search through the classifieds, an add was found, a phone call followed, and an appointment set.  After meeting the seller and riding his horse.  A deal was made and we had our first horse, along with a new friend.  Of course then I had to go home and tell my wife what I had done.  Fortunately, my wife puts up with me.

My daughter, a preteen, enjoyed the horse at first but over time her interests changed.  Not me, I was hooked.  I was inexperienced, but I was hooked!  I was scared of getting hurt, but I was hooked.

It wasn’t long and one horse wasn’t enough, we added another, then another, next thing you know we had a herd.

Fast forward to today, we have had several horses.  Each one of those horses taught me something.  Mostly of how little I knew over the years.  I have had lots of great horse experiences over the years and look forward to many more.

You know something else, a few years ago my mom got to come and ride too! Thats her and I in this blogs pic!
